WONDER WOMEN OF SHIRLEY
Women’s History Month at Shirley Plantation

Long before the age of suffragettes and the Equal Rights Amendment, the women of Shirley were making a name for themselves in a man’s world. In conjunction with the National Women’s History Project’s theme for Women’s History Month, Writing Women Back into History, Shirley Plantation will host our own Wonder Women of Shirley. During the month of March thematic tours will emphasize the role of women in Shirley’s history and how they helped protect and preserve the family and estate through eleven generations. These women have been instrumental in shaping almost 400 years of history here at Shirley Plantation.

Find out how Mary Braxton Randolph Carter and the women of Shirley took mercy on the Union Troops after the Battle of Malvern Hill and saved this plantation from plunder and destruction. Discover how two women of the 9th generation were able to bring the home through both World Wars and The Great Depression. These are just a few of the amazing tales that are waiting to be told during Women’s History Month at Shirley Plantation. If not for the dedication and struggle of the leading ladies of Shirley, including contributions of the women indentured servants and slaves, the Carter family legacy would be very different.

The Wonder Women of Shirley program is included with regular admission to Shirley Plantation and is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youths (6-18), with discounts for active-duty military, seniors, and AAA members. Military discounts are available year-round and the rate is $7.50 for retired military personnel and veterans. Admission for active duty and their dependants is $5.00 per person.
