Private family records and journals reveal the contributions made to American history by two high ranking military officers, both of whom have strong connections to the Carter family. Well-known Confederate General Robert E. Lee visited Shirley often in his youth as his mother, Anne Hill Carter Lee, was born and married at Shirley. Rear Admiral James H. Oliver, first governor of the Virgin Islands, married Marion Carter and lived, worked and was buried in Shirley next to his wife. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
