| February is the month of cold hands and warm hearts. In the spirit of St. Valentine, Shirley Plantation is bringing lovers together in many ways. Planning a wedding? Shirley Plantation is an alluring and majestic backdrop for wedding portraits any time of the year. February is also the month when copies of original love letters will be displayed from the private Hill Carter family archives. Take a “Sentimental Journey” with your sweetheart, friends, and children for a special day of romantic nostalgia and a tour through an elegant house and beautiful grounds. Have a cup of hot chocolate or warm cider in the gift shop. While in the gift shop, let your lover know that he/she is “Always on Your Mind” by writing your own love letter with a quill pen, just as Shirley lovers and St. Valentine did so many years ago. You will hear stories of famous Shirley couples like Ann Hill Carter and Revolutionary hero “Lighthorse Harry” Lee, who were married in front of the fireplace in the Great House parlor. Visitors can also read copies of original letters from Shirley’s archives, including love letters written by notable Virginians such as George Washington, a friend of the Lees, and from former Shirley resident, Confederate Commander-in-Chief Robert E. Lee. So if “love is in the air” for you in February, take a scenic drive along Route 5. If you are interested in wedding portraits or the chance to be married in the Great House at Shirley, please contact Janet Appel or Randy Carter. CU @ Shirley. |
