Trade and Ports of Call

Shirley Plantation, with its prominent location on the James River, has always had an active, bustling port. Sailing vessels and later steamships were a common sight as goods from around the world were shipped to and from the plantation.

Carter family members were also explorers of the world. Robert Randolph Carter, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, sailed in the 1850’s “China Sea Exploring Expedition” while the well-traveled Admiral Oliver served as the first governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The gift shop’s selection of nautical and sea life-inspired décor reminds us of the rich and diverse influences travel brings to our life.
