Places that shaped the early history of the United States …

Shirley Plantation featured in Summer 2011 Travel Special

Shirley Plantation is included in the American Archaeology Summer 2011 issue, a quarterly publication of the Archaeological Conservancy. Beginning on Page 33, writer Paula Neely guides readers through American history with creative text and photographs that are engaging and inviting.

Shirley Plantation, Mount Vernon, Stratford Hall, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestowne, Petersburg National Battlefield, James Madison’s Montpelier, and Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello are some of the 16 featured on the recommended driving tour focused on locations with archaeological exhibits and ongoing research.

In 1613, just six years after the founding of Jamestowne, Sir Thomas West could hardly have known the land grant he received from King James in the shire of Charles City would become the oldest family-owned business in North America. Today, Shirley is a rare example of the parallel story of America and the 11 generations of one family who continue to own, operate, and live at the plantation.
