Visit Shirley Plantation in Charles City from February 1-29, 2012, and hear about the 18th century art of courting which depended on passionate prose to woo that somebody special. Find out what it was like to express your feelings to someone before the age of text messages, social networking, and e-cards. | When you arrive at Shirley, warm-up your head, heart, and toes with a cup of hot chocolate or warm cider in Lady Cessalye’s Shop. While in the shop, why not surprise your special one by hand writing your own love letter with a quill pen, just as Shirley couples did so many years ago. You may be surprised to know the men wrote very compassionate and sentimental love letters to their ladies on a regular basis. In fact, a well-educated suitor could be determined by the quality of their penmanship. During your guided tour, you will hear stories of famous Shirley couples like Ann Hill Carter and Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, parents of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, who married in the Great House. You and your loved one can stand in the very room where they exchanged their wedding vows. Visitors can also read copies of original letters from Shirley’s archives, including love letters written by Hill Carter, hero of the War of 1812 and many couples from eleven generations of the Hill Carter family. The only time these letters will be on display is from February 1-29, 2012. “Romance Tours and Love Letters” tours are included at no additional cost. Regular admission to Shirley Plantation is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors, and military.
