How Mothers Shaped 400 Years of History
Mother’s Day Thematic Tours at Shirley Plantation

On Mother’s Day, May 8, 2011, treat your Mom to a special day at Shirley Plantation where you will witness how eleven generations of Mothers have shaped almost 400 years of history at North America’s oldest family-owned business, farm, and multi-generational home.

These Mothers did much more than bear the next generation of the Hill Carter family; they influenced Shirley Plantation’s history and America’s history. Elizabeth Hill Carter was the main force behind the construction of the Great House at Shirley Plantation. Anne Carter Lee, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s mother, was raised and married in the Great House at Shirley Plantation. Louise H. Carter raised two daughters who ran the property for sixty four years through two world wars and the Great Depression.

One notable story relates how Mary Braxton Randolph Carter and the other women of Shirley showed compassion and mercy for the wounded and dying Union soldiers lying on Shirley Plantation’s lawn after the Battle of Malvern Hill. Their compassion and motherly instincts saved the plantation from certain plunder and destruction by the Union Army. Shirley Plantation’s history is full of stories featuring Mothers who left their mark in so many ways.

“The Mothers of Shirley Plantation Thematic Tour” is included with regular admission to Shirley Plantation. Admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18) with discounts for military, seniors, and AAA members.
