HEROES AND PATRIOTS OF SHIRLEY PLANTATION
Military Thematic Tours during Memorial Day Weekend |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How many families have relatives who served in the military during every American conflict from Bacon’s rebellion to the World War II? The Hill Carter family has at least one veteran of each conflict in its ranks and you can learn about these men during Military Thematic Tours on Memorial Day Weekend May 28-31, 2011. The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, the Son of the American Revolution, and the Society of the War of 1812 held a ceremony in March 2011 at Shirley Plantation recognizing Carter family veterans buried in the private family cemetery from each of these conflicts. This event sparked staff researchers to dig into the family archives for more information. What they uncovered were incredible details about how the men of Shirley Plantation represented their families during times of military conflict and how they distinguished themselves in the line of duty dating back to 1676. Find out why 16-year-old Midshipman Hill Carter was decorated for valor for actions during the War of 1812 and how Hill’s son, Robert Randolph Carter, followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Navy at the age of 16 to become a Confederate blockade runner! Private family records and journals also reveal the contributions of high ranking officers who have a strong family connection to the Carter family such as famed Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Rear Admiral James H. Oliver. How and where do these men fit into Shirley Plantation’s past? Find out during Memorial Day Weekend Military Thematic Tours from May 28 31, 2011! Memorial Day Weekend Military Thematic Tours are included with regular admission to Shirley Plantation. Admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18) with discounts for military, seniors, and AAA members. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
