Military History & Memorial Day Weekend
The Hill Carter Family Stories of Serving Our Country |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| During Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, 2010, thematic tours will focus on the true tales of valor and service from the ranks of the Hill Carter family dating back to the 17th century. Being born into one of Virginia’s first families did not mean a free pass from military service. On the contrary, young men of the Hill Carter family were expected to serve their family, their state, and their country. Research of family letters and journals have uncovered incredible details of how the men of Shirley Plantation represented their families in military service and distinguished themselves in the line of duty. From the earliest days of the colonies, listen to the story of the three Edward Hills as they take on the natives and Nathaniel Bacon’s rebels. Listen to the private journal account of Midshipman Hill Carter as he boards the British ship HMS Epervier and helps capture the ship. Learn the story of Robert Randolph Carter who entered the Navy at age16 and eventually became a Confederate blockade runner. Private family records and journals reveal the contributions made to American history by Confederate General Robert E. Lee as well as Josiah “Siah” Carter, former slave from Shirley Plantation. Let every act of bravery and service be recognized during Memorial Day Weekend as we remember those who gave their all to serve this country. Military thematic tours are included in the regular admission. Active-duty military, retired military, veterans, and their dependants receive 50% off the regular admission rate year-round. This is the Carter family’s way of honoring those who serve, and have served, this country in order to preserve and protect the freedoms we enjoy today. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for military, seniors, and AAA members. Admission is $5 per person for active duty and retired military as well as their dependants. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Shirley Plantation is located on Route 5, just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. The plantation is open 7 days a week. For more information call 1-800-232-1613. |
