Bewitching Spirit of Aunt Pratt Lives On
| Join us in celebrating the bewitching spirit of Halloween at Shirley Plantation with ghostly stories of Aunt Martha Pratt, the legendary ghost of the Hill Carter family. From October 1 through 31, guided house tours will focus on strange happenings and what goes bump in the night in the 400-year old home to the 11 generation of the Hill Carter family. Martha Hill Pratt, known to the family as “Aunt Pratt,” was the daughter of Edward Hill III, 17th century inhabitant of Shirley. Strange sounds in the attic and a “traveling” and temperamental portrait of Aunt Pratt have spawned intriguing tales of eerie happenings at Virginia’s first plantation. |

L. B. Taylor, Jr., legendary author of five regional Virginia ghost books, will be autographing his books on October 25, 2:00-4:00pm, in the 18th century Store House. Ghosts of Virginia, Volume I by Mr. Taylor features the Aunt Pratt ghost story. Mr. Taylor also authored Haunted Houses published by Simon and Schuster. His books and CDs will be available for sale or bring your personal copy to be autographed. Warm cider and refreshments will be available for visitors from both worlds. Those who dare may accept an invitation from Aunt Pratt to take a walk with her at 5:00 p.m. to the cemetery. Take care, because with Aunt Pratt as a guide, the tour may take a spooky turn, as Aunt Pratt died in 1752. Learn about mourning rituals from the past compared to present. The legend of Aunt Pratt has been retold as a whimsical children’s book by Shirley Historical Interpreter Ed Dey in The Undiscovered Journals of Aunt Pratt: The Ghost of West and Shirley Hundred. There is no additional fee for the Aunt Pratt tour. Regular admission is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth. Discounts are available for AAA members, military, and seniors. Shirley is located on scenic Route 5, just 18 miles East of Richmond and 35 mile West of Williamsburg. For more information call 1-800-232-1613 or 1-804-829-5121. |
