Sweet Land of Liberty
Independence Day Ice Cream Social at Shirley Plantation on July 3rd

For a cool way to celebrate the birth of America come to Shirley Plantation for our Third Annual Ice Cream Social from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on July 3, 2010.

Enjoy stories from one of America’s founding families on the guided house tour and then relax under Shirley’s 350 year-old willow oak overlooking the James River. Breathe in the fresh country air and contemplate the freedom we take for granted each day. Create your own tailgate party or bring a blanket for a picnic lunch. Ice cream, fresh lemonade, and mint tea are included in the regular admission rate and available as long as supplies last.

Lawn bowling as well as other games and amusements are planned for an afternoon of light-hearted and fun activities on July 3rd. “Bring your kids to meet my kids!” says Pasture President, “Charlie the Goat.” Snap a photograph of Shirley’s famous rooster, “Kabob,” and his many hens. This is not a formal affair, just family fun in the good old southern summertime just as seven generations of the Carter family have celebrated since 1776!

Regular admission to Shirley plantation is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for active-duty and retired military, seniors and AAA members. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

Shirley Plantation is located on Route 5, just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. The plantation is open 7 days a week. For more information call 1-800-232-1613.
