SWEET LAND OF LIBERTY
Fourth of July Ice Cream Social at Shirley Plantation

On the Fourth of July, 2011, declare your independence from the heat with a cool summer treat at Shirley Plantation’s fourth annual Independence Day Ice Cream Social. What could be a better way for your family to celebrate the birth of our nation than a visit to our nation’s oldest family-owned business?

On the guided house tour enjoy stories from one of America’s founding families and then relax under Shirley’s 350 year-old willow oak which overlooks the James River. Soak in the scenery, breathe in the fresh country air, and contemplate the freedoms we take for granted every day. Bring a blanket for a picnic lunch or create your own tailgate party. Ice cream, lemonade, and ice tea are included with regular admission and will be available from 2:00 to 4:00 PM as long as supplies last.

An afternoon of festive games such as lawn bowling and other amusements are planned for July Fourth. Say hello to Shirley’s famous rooster, “Kabob,” and his many hen friends. As our Pasture President, Charlie, the Goat, is prone to say, “Bring your kids to meet my kids.” This is a casual affair with family fun in the summertime just as seven generations of the Carter family have celebrated since 1776.

The Fourth of July Ice Cream Social is included with regular admission to Shirley Plantation. Admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18) with discounts for military, seniors, and AAA members.

Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Shirley Plantation is located on Scenic Route 5, just 10 miles east of I-295 near Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg.
