| For a cool way to beat the heat during Independence Day weekend, enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social on Saturday, July 5th. Sit under a shade tree next to the James River while your troubles melt away. Visit Shirley Plantation from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for complimentary ice cream and celebrate America’s birthday at America’s first plantation. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch or plan your own tailgate party! Ice cream, fresh lemonade, and mint tea is free as long as it lasts. Join in an afternoon of games and amusements as they were played in the 18th and 19th centuries. Here is your chance to dance the Virginia reel, lawn bowl, or participate in a number of activities planned throughout the day. |

| Visit the majestic Great House, home to eleven generations of the same family. Tour the early colonial outbuildings, saunter around the beautiful grounds and gardens, and even meet our frolicking goats and chickens. This is not a formal affair, just family fun in the “good old summertime.” Come as you are and enjoy because the “It’s Summertime and the Living is Easy” at this James River plantation. |
