| For a cool way to beat the midday heat on Saturday, July, 4, come to Shirley Plantation for our second annual ice cream social from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Kick back and relax while sitting under Shirley’s 350-year-old willow oak on the banks of the James River. Bring a blanket for a picnic lunch or create your own tailgate party. Ice cream, fresh lemonade, and mint tea are included in the regular admission rate and available as long as supplies last. Did you know Shirley Plantation still has its original Ice House dating back to the 1730s? Ice from the Ice House was used to prepare food and ice cream for summer guests. Take a look at the Ice House and the other seven original outbuildings, several with new exhibits in them. |

| Lawn bowling as well as other games and amusements are planned for an afternoon of light-hearted and fun activities. “Bring your kids to meet my kids!” says Pasture President Charlie the Goat. Snap a photograph of Shirley’s famous rooster, “Kabob” with his hens. This is not a formal affair, just a family affair in the good old southern summertime just as 7 generations of the Carter family have celebrated since 1776! Shirley Plantation is located on Route 5, just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. The plantation is open 7 days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth, with discounts for AAA members, and seniors. Active-duty military, retired military, and veterans receive 50% off the regular admission rate year-round.
