OUR KIDS WON'T LEAVE THE CLASSROOM
Home School Day at Shirley Plantation |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| On April 22, 2010, find out why Shirley’s Educational Coordinator, Lee Hayes, says, “our students won’t leave the classroom”. From its beginning, Shirley Plantation served as a home school for the Carter children and their extended family including a young Robert E. Lee, future Confederate General of the Civil War. On April 22, this 400-year-old plantation will host students for its third annual Home School day with special activities, hands-on programs, and demonstrations from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. All programs are family oriented and designed for students from five years old to ninety-five years old! Adults are encouraged to join in the programs and activities. Activities and hands-on programs are located throughout the historic area’s grounds and outbuildings surrounded by open fields and the James River. Some of the programs designed for student enjoyment and education include Lawn Bowling, Colonial Games, Art in the Park, and Story Telling. In the Role of Religion program, discover the multi-cultural influences that have shaped society since the colonial era. In the Chicken Whisperer hands-on program meet and talk to Shirley’s own “Chicken Whisper” and flock of chickens as you learn about tips for starting your own backyard chicken farm. These are just a few of the activities available on April 22. Call 1-800-232-1613 or email tours@shirleyplantation.com for a more detailed itinerary of programs for April 22. Reservations are required for groups of ten (10) or more. Admission for Home School Day is $7.50 a day for youth (ages 6-18) and $7.50 a day for adults accompanying home school students. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18) for non-home school visitors. Complimentary admission is available for youth under six years of age. Admission is $5 for active-duty and retired military as well as their dependants. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Shirley Plantation is located on Route 5, just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg.
