SUMMERTIME AND THE LEARNING IS EASY (AND FUN TOO)

Shirley Plantation's Home School Week

How can a four-hundred-year-old plantation educate and entertain home school students? Find out June 18 - 22, 2009 as Shirley Plantation hosts its first Home School Week with special activities, hands-on programs, and demonstrations from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. daily. All programs are family oriented and designed for students from five years old to ninety-five years old! Adults are encouraged to join in the programs and activities.

Activities and hands-on programs are based on several age ranges and are located in appropriate locations throughout the historic area’s grounds and outbuildings. Watch the blacksmith as he plies his trade over a reconstructed iron forge and creates tools and works of art. In the Storehouse the Spinner will demonstrate the craft of wool spinning as was practiced in colonial times. In the Role of Religion program, discover the multi-cultural influences that have shaped society since the colonial era. Story telling, colonial schoolroom, courtesies, and a guided walking tour of the grounds are just some of the week’s scheduled activities.

Students of all ages and adults are welcome to enjoy colonial games such as lawn bowling, pick-up-sticks, close-the-box, dominoes, nine pins and marbles as did the Carter family children hundreds of years ago. From its beginning in the 1700s, Shirley Plantation served as a home school for the Carter children and their extended families including Robert E. Lee.

Programs will be scheduled throughout the week; not all programs and activities will be available each day. Check online, call ahead or email tours@shirleyplantation.com for a more detailed itinerary for each day from June 18 -22, 2009.

Admission for Home School Week is $7.50 a day for youth (ages 6-18) and $7.50 a day for adults. Complimentary admission for youth under six years of age. Reservations required for groups of ten (10) or more.
