Goats, Games and a Great House: But Wait, there's more at Shirley Plantation's Home School Day
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Shirley Plantation’s Home School Day on May 3, 2008 will feature six new programs as well as several tried and true programs from last year’s Home School Day. The new programs include Courtesies and Manners, The James (river), Role of Religion, Stitch-in-Time, Mourning Rituals, and The Silent Ones Speak (slavery). All programs are family oriented and designed for children of all ages above five years of age. Activities are based on specific age ranges and located in various places throughout the historic area’s grounds and outbuildings. Younger children may enjoy “Art-in-the-Park” or listen to the storybook lady during the Talking Book program. Become an apprentice as a brick mason in “Brick-by-Brick” and learn how to construct a brick wall two feet thick. Junior-high and high-school-age students can explore Shirley grounds using a compass and map, dance the Virginia reel, take a turn at the art of needlework, or take part in logic games in “Think Tank.” Adults are encouraged to join with the students in these activities. Children of all ages and adults may try their hand at colonial games played 200 years ago such as lawn bowling, jacks, pick-up-sticks, and marbles and observe the blacksmith trade provided by a costumed interpreter with a reconstructed iron forge. The “Goat and Chicken Whisperer” will make a special appearance in the pasture next to the Corn Crib and introduce everyone to Shirley’s animals. Tours of the Great House will include tales of the plantation’s colorful history spawned by 11 generations of one family to own and reside at Shirley. From its beginning in the 1700s, Shirley Plantation served as a school for many children and was one of the first home schools in the new world. The 400-year-old plantation will host home-schooled students ages 5-18 for a day of learning and playing as the Carter family children did hundreds of years ago. Admission for Home School Day is $7.50 for students and $7.50 for adults with complimentary admission for children under five years old. Registration is required and the deadline is Friday, April 25. |
