Shirley Plantation featured in June 2011 The Heraldry Gazette

Shirley Plantation is included in the June 2011 issue of The Heraldry Gazette published by The Heraldry Society in Guildford, England for its members throughout the world. Researcher and writer, Mr. Tom McIntyre, was enamored with Shirley Plantation’s original 17th-century hatchments on display in the Great House.

Hatchments are depictions of coats of arms created specifically for funerals originating back to the early seventeenth century. Over 5,000 hatchments have been recorded in the United Kingdom. However, in the United States, there remain only eleven. Of these eleven, only two are stilled owned by the family for whose ancestors they were created. Painted for Edward Hill III and Edward Hill IV, these two hatchments are owned by the 11th generation of the Hill Carter family who are also the 11th generation owners of Shirley Plantation. Both hatchments are on display in the guided house tour portion of the Great House at Shirley Plantation.

The Hill Carter family and the staff of Shirley Plantation extend their gratitude to Mr. Tom McIntyre and The Heraldry Gazette for sharing their extensive research regarding hatchments which enhances the interpretation at Shirley Plantation of its unique history and collection.
