Student Group Tours
Student groups are always welcome at Shirley Plantation.
All student group programs are customized based on the age and number of students participating as well as the length of time scheduled for visiting. Activities listed below may be adapted for students of all ages with some programs best suited to certain grade levels.
Student Group package includes Guided Tour of the Great House, a Self-Guided Tour of the Grounds and Outbuildings, and one program. A minimum of twenty (20) students is required to reserve a complimentary student program. Programs for groups of 10-19 and additional programs are available for $2.00 per student with prior reservation. Our staff will gladly assist you in planning your visit and coordinating your schedule of activities.
Advanced reservations are required for group discounts and programs. Program availability based on staff availability.
Punctuality in arrival time is appreciated; late arrivals cannot be guaranteed their entire programs.

*Complimentary admission provided for one teacher per ten students. One chaperone or teacher per ten students is recommended.

Adult Group Tours
Adult Groups are always welcome at Shirley Plantation. A minimum of ten (10) is required to reserve a group tour. Additional programs are available and customized based on the group’s interest and schedule. When your group arrives, our staff will greet you and provide orientation to the historic area. Our staff can vary its interpretation to focus on several topics depending on the interests of your group. Advanced reservations are required for group discounts and programs.
Punctuality in arrival time is appreciated; late arrivals cannot be guaranteed their entire program.
Included in your Visit: A guided tour of the Great House, which includes stories of the Hill Carter family members who have lived at Shirley for 12 generations, and a Self-Guided Tour of the Grounds, Gardens and Outbuildings. During orientation your group will be provided with a grounds and gardens map which includes information on each of the original Colonial outbuildings and other points of interest.
Add a program: Some programs subject to staffing availability and length of visit. Add $3.00 per person per program.
Guided Grounds Tour: Enjoy a guided tour of Shirley’s many original and authentic Colonial outbuildings and the grounds surrounding the Great House. Tour can be customized to focus on building usage, historic preservation, trees and plants as well as plantation wildlife.
Slave Life at Shirley: Explore the stories of slave life at Shirley Plantation by reviewing copies of family documents and letters and discover the role of archaeology in interpreting slave life at Shirley.
Role of Religion: Learn and ask questions about the various spiritual beliefs both Anglo-Saxon and African Americans were practicing during the Colonial era and how it influenced early America.
The Mighty James (River): Learn how the James River changed history in 1607 and how it continues as one of the most influential rivers in America today. Enjoy the majestic river views.
Meet the 11th Generation: For an additional $10 per person, meet a member of the 11th generation of the Hill Carter family of Shirley Plantation. Ask questions and have your picture taken with a direct descendant of the same family to reside at Shirley since 1738. Subject to availability.

Groups can have seated Supper/Dinner for additional $10 per person and an additional $75 per hour for each hour after closing.
