Gardens, Grapes and a Green Day
Garden Week, Wine Tasting and Earth Day at Shirley Plantation |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| How does a four-hundred-year-old plantation celebrate new growth and renewal at the same time? Find out the week of April 18 - 25, as Shirley Plantation kicks off Historic Garden Week in Virginia by observing Earth Day. On Saturday, April 18, Shirley Plantation will feature an exhibit showcasing how ecological “lemons” were successfully turned into earth-friendly “lemonade.” Learn how unwanted dredge spoils were used to reclaim mined land and return it to productive farm land. Discover how modern day soil science is financially shaping the landscape of tomorrow’s farms. For the week of April 18-25, Virginia’s first plantation will join in “America’s largest open house” with displays of colorful flowers throughout the Great House. After touring the Great House, enjoy the boxwood, flower, and herb gardens. |

| Don’t forget to take an easy walk along the river bank near the 350-year-old willow oak tree while soaking in the scenic views and the bounty Mother Nature has created for all. On April 23, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., join us for a wine tasting on the Garden Terrace for an additional fee of $3.00 per person. Locally owned and operated, the Appomattox River Peanut Company of Hopewell will provide a wide variety of wines for sampling. Top off your visit with a stop at the Shirley gift shop, Lady Cessalye’s Shop, where a new line of merchandise features items with a wildlife and nature theme. The Earth Day exhibit and Garden Week tours are included with regular admission. The wine tasting on April 23 is an additional $3.00 per person. Shirley Plantation is located on Route 5, just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. The plantation is open 7 days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth, with discounts for AAA members, military, and seniors.
