See Shirley In Her Bloomers
What smells more like spring than an April day in the country when flowers are in bloom? Experience the glory of a spring day at Shirley Plantation during Virginia’s Historic Garden Week. From April 19 to 26, Virginia’s first plantation will join in “America’s largest open house” with displays of colorful flowers throughout the Great House.

Take home your own cuttings from the Shirley garden, following demonstrations by the plantation gardener. On a guided tour through the elegant Great House, learn the continuing story of the 11-generation Hill Carter family which still calls the Great House home. The gardens and grounds are already dressed in green for spring and are waiting for you to amble around and search out Shirley’s trees and plantings of rare vintage and origin. Stop, rest, and relax with your significant someone under the shade of a large 350-year-old willow oak tree. Search out yellow daffodils planted long ago on the banks of the majestic James River.

Top off your Shirley tour with a visit to the gift shop for a new line of spring merchandise, as well as garden ornaments, fine dining ware, children’s period toys, novelty silver jewelry, and specially designed mint julep cups.

Celebrate the glory of spring as you view the pastoral beauty of one of Virginia’s most scenic plantations. With almost 400-years of family history, Shirley has a special story to tell. Come and hear it with your family and friends during Historic Garden Week!
