| A striking display of springtime flowers will be featured at Shirley Plantation April 21-28 in celebration of Historic Garden Week. This week is an annual event in Virginia during which private and historic gardens are open to the public. Historic Garden Week was organized by The Garden Club of Virginia more than seven decades ago to provide funding to restore historic gardens and grounds throughout Virginia. Visitors approaching Shirley’s Great House will be greeted by newly-renovated, two-story porticoes. On the tour of the mansion, historical interpreters will bring to life the stories of one family who have owned and operated this grand southern plantation for 11 generations. Fresh floral arrangements inside the Great House will enhance its notable architectural style, three-story-high “flying” staircase, handsome historic furnishings, and finely wrought interior woodwork. In the spring, Shirley’s gardens, with their historic English and American boxwoods and spring flowers, are a favorite retreat for visitors. Shirley Plantation’s Museum Gift Shop now features new displays for the spring with garden ornaments suitable for the home and garden. Fine dining ware, mint julep cups, children’s period toys, artful sewing kits, elegant men’s gifts, and more await the spring decorator wanting to take home a touch of southern plantation elegance and practicality. Located on the banks of the scenic James River in Charles City County, Virginia, Shirley Plantation is just 10 miles east of Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. The Hill Carter family has owned and operated the plantation as America’s oldest family-owned business since 1638. |
