Father’s day Thematic Tours at Shirley Plantation |

| Do you know how your grandfather influenced your father? How will you influence your own children? On Father’s Day, June 19, 2011, spend a day on a family farm in the country where fathers have influenced their families to hold on to their family heritage since 1638! You can learn from these founding fathers of America and decide for yourself what fatherly advice these 11 generations of fathers have passed down through history that you may want to incorporate in your own family traditions. Hear the stories of the three Edward Hills who were adventurers, entrepreneurs, colonists, patriots, and of which one is a founding father of Virginia. For three generations these men battled the local tribesmen, Bacon’s rebellion and a number of political ideals brewing in the New World. Discover the story of eight generations of Carter family fathers to own, operate and live at Shirley Plantation. These men fought in wars close to home all the while protecting their home from the ravages of war. Learn the story of Hill Carter as he joins the Navy at age 16 and is decorated for valor in battle. Later in life he sends his five sons away to fight the Civil War only to have the war come to his front door. Hear the story of Robert Randolph Carter, who, like his father, Hill Carter, joined the Navy at 16 and later became a Confederate blockade runner. Robert Randolph Carter raised two daughters that ran and kept Shirley Plantation in the Carter family through two world wars and the Great Depression. What fatherly advice and principles did he pass on to his daughters? The Father’s Day thematic tour is included with regular admission to Shirley Plantation. Admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18) with discounts for military, seniors, and AAA members. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Shirley Plantation is located on Scenic Route 5, just 10 miles east of I-295 near Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg.
