SHIRLEY FAMILY FUN DAYS -
“It’s summertime and the learning is easy …”

It’s summertime and the learning is easy at Shirley! School’s out, so relax, unwind, and take in the view as you and your family spend a day of fun and exploration at Shirley Plantation on the scenic James River. Family-friendly programs will be offered to adults and children, from June 16 to September 3. Activities with a youth-oriented focus will bring adults and young people together, interacting and learning at their own pace, while creating family memories. To make the day easily affordable, all activities are included in the regular admission rate and reservations are not required. In the Shirley gift shop a 10% discount on all youth-oriented merchandise will also apply from June 16 to September 3.

On June 23, Richmond silhouette artist Billie Wills will be on hand to cut one-of-a-kind silhouettes of children. Ms. Wills has been hand-cutting silhouettes of children for over 25 years. She has worked with Goochland County schools, and is the founder of Arts in the Garden, an annual event in Bon Air. For your silhouette reservations, call Shirley at (804) 829-5121. Original silhouettes cost $20 each.

Interactive and hands-on programs, popular all year, have been happily modified to be shared by adults and children in a carefree summer setting. Activities will bring young people out in the sun on the beautiful and spacious Shirley grounds. “Family Fun Days” will offer visitors from ages 1 to 99 an adventurous opportunity to visit the Shirley Great House as well as the dovecote, icehouse, granary and other historic Colonial outbuildings of the plantation.

On each Saturday during the summer, a different activity will be offered. For example, on Saturday, June 16, the activities will focus on gardens and plantings. On Saturday, June 23, Billie Wills hand cuts silhouettes. On Saturday, June 30, a costumed interpreter will demonstrate spinning wool. Every day of the week, period games will be offered in the original Colonial outbuildings and outdoor activities will be offered as weather permits. Please call in advance for a schedule of activities and programs.

At Shirley Plantation, it’s “all about the family.” At this 400-year-old plantation where 11 successive generations of Carters have grown up, family has always taken front stage. Student programs are historically part of its heritage, beginning with the Carter family schoolroom where Carter cousin Robert E. Lee went to school as a youth. The youth-friendly focus of “Family Days” invites families to roam and enjoy the beautiful Shirley acreage which was recently preserved with a conservation easement donated by Shirley heir, Charles Hill Carter III. By preserving this majestic expanse for future generations, Mr. Carter hopes families will always derive pleasure from his family home.
