FOUNDERS AND PATRIOTS HONOR EDWARD HILL II

| On March 26, 2011, the Virginia Society of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America will dedicate a marker honoring the life of Edward Hill II of Shirley Plantation. Edward Hill II was a founding father of Virginia and held several influential positions including: Speaker of the House of Burgesses, Commander in Chief of the Charles City and Surry County Militias, and Treasurer of the Colony. As a second generation colonist, Edward Hill II, was a self-reliant entrepreneur who believed in making his own destiny. The Virginia Order of the Founders and Patriots of America is dedicated to promoting patriotism and respect for the character and heroism of the founders and patriots of America, promoting educational, historical and patriotic programs, and bringing together those who share this common heritage and love for the history of the first colonists and their descendants. The Order of Founders and Patriots is active in twenty five states and was founded in 1896. The Order is made up of “Associates” who trace their ancestry back to the first colonists and who have forefathers in the same male ancestral line who served in the American Revolution. The new Governor of the Virginia Society of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America is L. Taylor Cowardin of Richmond, Virginia. Today, the Order of Founders and Patriots of America membership consists of a wide range of individuals, bonded together by a common heritage and dedicated to American ideals. The Shirley Plantation Foundation will be hosting the private dedication at the Hill Carter family cemetery with direct descendents of Edward Hill who reside at Shirley Plantation. A private luncheon for the Society members and representatives of the Hill Carter family will take place in one of the historic complex original outbuildings. March 26 is the birthday of Ann Hill Carter Lee, wife of Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee, Revolutionary War hero, and mother to Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The guest speaker will be Rev. Glenn Browder whose presentation will be about the little-known aspects of Ann Hill Carter of Shirley Plantation and her influence in America’s history. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors and military.
