Earth Day at Shirley Plantation
In a day and time when we are all interested in the safety of our food and the future of our environment, find out what farmers at Shirley Plantation have known for hundreds of years: “going green” is not a choice; it is a necessity for survival. During a presentation on April 22 from 10 AM to 3 PM, discover what agricultural practices farmers at Shirley have been using for generations to ensure a safe and sustainable source of food. Discover the connection linking the Carter family with this land along the James River in our “Lemons to Lemonade” presentation. This presentation will bring to light how unwanted dredge spoils were used to sweeten previously mined land (lemons) and return it to productive farm land (lemonade).

Also on April 22 from 10 AM to 3 PM, meet and talk with our “Chicken Whisperer” as she gives out tips for starting your own backyard chicken farm. Learn how a few chickens can provide insect control, food, fertilizer and fun for the whole family. You will never have to worry about where your morning omelet comes from again.

Top off your Shirley visit with a stop at the Shirley gift shop, Lady Cessalye’s Shop, where a new line of merchandise features items with a wildlife and nature theme.

The Earth Day presentations are included with regular admission. Admission is $11.00 for adults and $7.00 for youth, with discounts for active-duty military, seniors, and AAA members. Admission for retired and active-duty military as well as their dependants is $5.00 per person. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
