Discover A New World of Learning
Discovery Day at Shirley Plantation |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Find out why our students love to discover learning about the past, present and future as Shirley Plantation hosts its first Day of Discovery on Saturday, October 9, 2010. In the spirit of exploration and discovery paying homage to Christopher Columbus, the 400-year-old plantation will host students for a fun-filled day of learning with special activities, hands-on programs, and demonstrations from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. All programs are family oriented and designed for students from five years old to ninety-five years old! Adults are encouraged to join in the programs and activities. Activities and hands-on programs are structured for several age ranges and are located in appropriate sites throughout the historic area’s grounds and outbuildings. During the Mighty James (River) learn about the vital role the James River played in the founding of our nation and its economy from the home of America’s oldest family-owned business. In the Role of Religion program, discover the multi-cultural influences shaping society since the colonial era and influencing the founding of America as a country. Listen and learn from Shirley’s own, “Chicken Whisperer,” about eggs, nutrition, personalities, pecking order, social structure, and tips for starting your own backyard chicken farm. Slave Life at Shirley, Colonial Schoolroom, Colonial Games, and guided tours of the Great House and grounds are just some of the scheduled activities waiting for you and your family on Discovery Day. Call ahead or email tours@shirleyplantation.com for a more detailed itinerary of programs for October 9th. Reservations are required for groups of ten (10) or more.
