Lee and the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. Separated by nearly 100 years of history, Lee and King had more similarities in their beliefs than you would have ever imagined. The conventional wisdom is that Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert E. Lee were as far apart on many issues as two men could possibly be. Come to Shirley Plantation from January 13 - 16, 2012, and find out just how close the legendary Civil Rights leader and famed Confederate general were on many subjects. You may be surprised to learn what these men had in common and what philosophical views they shared. Discover what influence these Southern gentlemen had on the political career of Charles Hill Carter, Jr. from 1950 to 1991.

The 30-minute “Civil War to Civil Rights” program brings to life the inspirational words of General Robert E. Lee and Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. Starting times for programs are 12 PM, 1 PM, and 3 PM from January 13th through January 16th, 2012. The program emphasizes the lives, careers, and visions of two of the most quotable men in United States history and will take place in the original Colonial Store House building. Complimentary warm cider will be available.

The “Civil War to Civil Rights” program is included at no additional charge. Regular admission to Shirley Plantation is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors and military.
