| Find out why Santa Clause has to dodge the three-and-a-half foot pineapple on the top of the Great House at Shirley Plantation. Learn the reason why pineapples were the centerpieces of Colonial entertaining and why some families rented pineapples for the holidays. At Shirley Plantation’s Annual Open House on December 4, 2010 enjoy this grand southern plantation all decked out with twinkling lights and joyous decorations on the inside and outside. Attend church services during our “Role of Religion” program highlighting the influence of religious customs and church policy on Christmas traditions.Relax by the fireplace with a cup of hot cider in the original Colonial Kitchen.Refreshments in the Colonial Kitchen are available from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM on December 4, and church services are scheduled for 11:30 AM, 1:00 PM, and 2:30 PM on December 4. From December 1 to January 6, visitors to Shirley will enjoy guided tours of the Great House featuring family Christmas stories dating back to the 1700s. Enter the Colonial Kitchen and you will feel as if you just interrupted the cook preparing a Christmas feast. In the other original Colonial outbuildings, exhibit panels, displays, and a triple subject timeline will satisfy your curiosity about the past while the gift shop will satisfy your desire for a one-of-a-kind gift for that some one special on your list. Shirley Christmas ornaments, 1882 reproduction Christmas cards, mint julep cups, embossed wine glasses, and the new edition of the Shirley Plantation booklet are a few of the many items found only at Lady Cessalye’s Shop. Charter memberships for the Shirley Plantation Foundation are available until January 1, 2011 and make great gifts for the history lover on your list. No additional fee for the Open House or Christmas Thematic tours which are included with regular admission. Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Regular admission is $11.00 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors and military.
