Excerpt from Booklet: Shirley Plantation again prospered and visitors enjoyed the hospitality of the Great House. An 1833 visitor’s description of a typical meal at Hill Carter’s home depicts, “Mrs. C. at one end of the table with a large dish of rich soup, and Mr. C. at the other, with a saddle of fine mutton: scattered around the table ...ham, beef, turkey, duck, eggs with greens and c. – for vegetables potatoes, beets, hominy. After you have dined there circulates a bottle of sparkling champagne.” Desserts included, “fine plum pudding, tarts, ice cream, West India preserves, figs, raisins, and almonds.” |
