Walking and Talking with a Couple of Birdbrains
Nature Walk with the Birdmen of Shirley Plantation

Shirley Plantation’s birding expert, Tom McCary, will lead a bird walk on Saturday, March 13th beginning at 8:30 a.m. Accompanying Mr. McCary will be Randy Carter, member of the 11th generation of the Hill Carter family. Mr. Carter has over 30 years of experience studying waterfowl on Shirley Plantation. Mr. McCary and Mr. Carter will guide participating birders into areas of the plantation property normally not open to the public, places where only the birds congregate. Following the guided portion of the walk, participants can continue their bird watching while touring the historic grounds at their leisure.

With the arrival of spring just around the corner, numerous species of birds will be stopping at Shirley Plantation on their northbound migrations. Shore birds, ospreys, eagles, song birds, hawks and a wide variety of waterfowl are frequent visitors to Shirley Plantation’s acreage on the banks of the James River. McCary has been observing and recording his birding experiences at Shirley since 2002. His published columns can be viewed at birdwatching.

To participate in the March 13th bird walk with Shirley’s own Randy Carter and Tom McCary, prior reservations are required. Appropriate attire and good walking shoes are strongly recommended. Field glasses, binoculars, cameras, and video cameras are permitted on the nature walk.

The fee of $15 per person includes admission to the guided birdwalk as well as admission to the guided tour of the Great House and a self-guided tour of the grounds and outbuilding exhibits.

Shirley Plantation is open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Regular admission is $11 for adults and $7.50 for youth (6-18), with discounts for AAA members, seniors and military. Military discounts are available year-round and the rate is $7.50 for retired military personnel and veterans. Admission for active duty and their dependants is $5.00 per person.
