Aunt Pratt, Beth Brown, and Spirits on the Lawn
Ghostly Book Signing at Shirley Plantation |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Join us for a book signing with Beth Brown, author of Haunted Plantations of Virginia, Haunted Battlefields of the Civil War, and Wicked Richmond. In addition to winning the 2010 Library of Virginia People’s Choice Award, Ms. Brown has served as a paranormal consultant to several media outlets, including A&E Network, CBS, PBS, and Discovery. Ms. Brown will be signing books and sharing her interests in history and the paranormal from 1 PM to 4 PM on October 29, 2011 in the original Store House at Shirley Plantation. What a great time to find out if Beth Brown senses the spirits of the hundreds of wounded and dying Union soldiers who sought refuge at Shirley after the Battle of Malvern Hill in July of 1862. As a Carter family journal recorded at the time, “They lay about on this lawn and all up and down the riverbank…until they died or were carried away.” Shirley Plantation’s ghost “Aunt Pratt,” is featured in Haunted Plantations of Virginia and is for sale in Lady Cessalye’s Shop at Shirley. A more detailed account of Union soldiers at Shirley is described in the Shirley Plantation Foundation Booklet, also available in Lady Cessalye’s Shop. Complimentary warm cider and light refreshments will be available at the book signing as long as supplies last. |

Following the book signing, join “Aunt Pratt” at 5 PM for a guided and mournful walk to the family cemetery. This is the only time of the year when the family graveyard is available for viewing and the only scheduled appearance of “Aunt Pratt” from the spellbound regions. Mourning customs, ghost stories, and more will be shared with visitors during the walk along the river to the cemetery. Shirley Plantation is located on Scenic Route 5, just 10 miles east of I-295 near Richmond and 35 miles west of Williamsburg. For more information, visit our website at call 1-800-232-1613. |
