| “Aunt Pratt” was Martha Hill Pratt, the daughter of early Shirley ancestor Edward Hill III. Her portrait in the bed chamber of Shirley’s Great House is the subject of intriguing stories which have been retold by noted author L.B.Taylor, Jr. in his book, Ghosts of Virginia, Volume I. Mr. Taylor is also author of Haunted Houses, published by Simon and Schuster, as well as five regional Virginia ghost books, including Civil War Ghosts of Virginia. He will appear at Shirley for a book signing 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Halloween, October 31, where his books and CDs will be offered for sale. Enjoy complimentary warmed cider and refreshments. At Halloween twilight time, 5:00 p.m. on October 31, visitors who dare are challenged to take a guided Ghostly Evening walking tour to the Carter family cemetery. Mourning customs, ghost stories, and more will be shared with visitors during the tour along the river to the graveyard. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Shirley Plantation is beautiful at this witching hour and it’s a good walk beyond the gardens, around the bend, by the James River shore, and finally to the private family cemetery; only those stout of heart (and of shoe) should attempt this once-a-year Ghostly Evening walk! All ghostly activities are included in the regular admission fee, unless guests wish to purchase a book to be signed. Regular admission to Shirley Plantation is $10.50 for adults and $7.00 for youths (6-18) with discounts for active-duty military, seniors, and AAA members. Shirley is located on Route 5 between Williamsburg and Richmond. For more information call 1-800-232-1613 or 1-804-829-5121. |
